9 Days Eastern Uganda Wildlife and Cultural Tour
Overview
Eastern Uganda offers a different kind of adventure with dramatic mountains, waterfalls, open wilderness, rich cultural experiences, and less crowded safari destinations. The 10 day itinerary includes a city tour in Kampala, adventure activities in Jinja, hiking and abseiling at Sipi Falls, stunning views of Mount Elgon from the top of Sipi Falls and wildlife safari experiences in Pian Upe. During the journey, you will enjoy an authentic coffee cultural experience in the Sipi region.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
When you arrive at Entebbe International Airport, you will be met by a professional local guide who will welcome you and transfer you to Boma Hotel for check-in. If time allows, you can relax at the hotel or take an optional visit to the Botanical Gardens for a nature walk, or explore Entebbe town and its lakeside views. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Begin your journey from Entebbe to Kampala with a stop at Kabaka's Lake, the largest man-made lake in Uganda. Learn about its history and why it was built by the King of Buganda. Continue to Kabaka's Palace, the official palace of the Buganda Kingdom, where you will learn about the history and culture of the Buganda people. You will also visit Idi Amin’s underground torture chambers located within the palace grounds. Afterwards, visit Kibuli Mosque, one of the oldest and most important mosques in Uganda, and learn about the Muslim faith and community in the country. Proceed to Uganda Museum, where you will discover Uganda’s history, traditions, and different cultural groups through exhibitions and historical collections. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to the Bahai Temple, the only Bahai temple in Africa. Learn about the Bahai faith and enjoy the peaceful gardens and beautiful views of Kampala. Later, visit Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, an important religious site built in memory of the Uganda Martyrs who were killed because of their Christian faith. After the tour, return to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay at Mestil Hotel
Have an early breakfast and drive to Jinja, a stop at Sezibwa Falls along the Sezibwa River. This culturally significant site is traditionally believed to have been born rather than formed. Enjoy a guided nature walk around the falls, taking in the lush scenery while spotting wildlife such as birds and monkeys. Continue to Mabira Forest for another guided walk, where you may encounter a variety of bird species, butterflies, and primates. With some luck, you might even spot the rare Ugandan Mangabey, found only in Uganda. Afterward, proceed to Jinja, check in at the Kipling lodge, and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, take a boat ride to the source of the Nile River at the submerged Rippon Falls. This marks the point where the Nile begins its long journey from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea, and you will witness the river flowing out of the lake. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, you will head out for an exciting white water rafting experience on the Nile River. Before starting, you will receive a safety briefing and be provided with all the necessary rafting gear. You will then navigate thrilling grade 4–5 rapids, enjoying the powerful drops, splashes, and the beautiful scenery of forested islands and roaring waters. After the rafting adventure, you will return for lunch. In the afternoon, you will take part in a quad biking experience. This begins with a mandatory training session on a training area to help you get familiar with the bikes. Once ready, you will ride along the banks of the Nile, passing through forests, tea and sugar plantations, and enjoying scenic views of the surrounding countryside. After the day’s activities, you will return to the lodge for relaxation, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, you will begin your journey to Sipi Falls. Upon arrival, you will check in at Sipi heritage Lodge and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, you will take part in a community visit where you will meet local people, interact with them, and learn about their way of life, including their music, dance, and drama. After the experience, you will return to the lodge for relaxation, followed by dinner and an overnight stay
After breakfast, you will meet your guide for a briefing before beginning your adventure. A walking stick will be provided to support you during the hike to the 3 distinct Sipi Waterfalls. The trek to the top covers approximately 7 km and includes steep ascents, ladder climbing, and scenic walks through local farms. Sturdy hiking boots with a firm grip are highly recommended for comfort and safety. Upon reaching the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Elgon, Lake Kyoga, the Karamoja plains, and the surrounding landscapes perfect for photography and videography. You will then enjoy your packed lunch while taking in the serene environment. You will have the opportunity to engage in an exciting abseiling experience at the Sipi falls. Your guide will coordinate this activity at a designated section of the central waterfall ensuring both safety and enjoyment. Continue exploring the beauty of Sipi Falls with visits to the other two waterfalls, each offering its own unique scenery In the afternoon, set out for a guided coffee tour. This experience will take you to a local coffee farm, where you will visit the plantation and learn about how coffee is grown. You will then proceed to the processing area, where you will take part in preparing the coffee, removing the husks, roasting the beans, and finally making a fresh cup of coffee to enjoy. After the day’s activities, you will return to your accommodation for relaxation, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.
After an early breakfast, transfer to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve via Mbale and Sironko, enjoying scenic views and sightseeing along the way. Stop for lunch en route before continuing to the reserve. Upon arrival, check in at Karamojong Overland Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
After an early breakfast, enjoy a guided game drive through the savannah plains of Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve in search of cheetahs, zebras, elands, oribis, Uganda kobs, buffaloes, impalas, and the rare roan antelopes, which are only found in this area of Uganda. After lunch, visit a nearby Karamojong community to learn about the unique culture and lifestyle of the local people living near the reserve. Enjoy traditional dances, music, and cultural performances before returning to Karamojong Overland Camp for dinner and an overnight stay.
After an early breakfast, depart from Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve and transfer back to Kampala via Mbale. Stop for lunch in Jinja and enjoy the scenic countryside views along the journey before arriving in Kampala later in the day.
