9 Days Northern Uganda Safari
Overview
Northern Uganda offers a remarkable blend of culture, wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. This journey takes you through some of Uganda’s most iconic destinations, including Gulu, the largest town in Northern Uganda, known for its relaxed atmosphere and rich cultural heritage.
Along the way, you will visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for an unforgettable rhino tracking experience on foot, and continue to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest national park, known for its diverse wildlife and spectacular scenery.
The safari then proceeds to Kidepo Valley National Park, famous for its sweeping savannah plains, abundant wildlife, and unspoiled wilderness. Kidepo is widely regarded as one of Uganda’s most spectacular and least crowded safari destinations, offering an authentic and exclusive safari experience.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a professional local representative who will transfer you to The Boma Hotel for check-in and relaxation. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a short excursion around Entebbe and enjoy the beautiful lakeside views along the shores of Lake Victoria. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
After an early breakfast, begin your journey from Entebbe towards Northern Uganda with a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided rhino tracking experience. Enjoy walking through the sanctuary as you observe rhinos in their natural habitat while learning about their behavior and ongoing conservation efforts. After lunch en route, continue to Murchison Falls National Park and pass through the Kichumbanyobo Gate before proceeding to Sambiya River Lodge for check-in. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
After an early breakfast, head out for a morning game drive on the northern bank of Murchison Falls National Park. During the drive, look out for wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes, elephants, and other animals found in the park. Return to the lodge for lunch and some relaxation. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile to the base of Murchison Falls, where the river separates the northern and southern sections of the park. Along the way, you may spot hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species. After the cruise, take a guided hike to the top of the falls for spectacular views and great photo opportunities. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, depart Murchison Falls National Park and continue on a scenic drive to Gulu, enjoying the beautiful savannah landscapes along the way. Upon arrival, check in at African Roots Guest House for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, visit the Acholi Cultural Institution to learn about the history and traditions of the Acholi people. Take part in cultural activities such as traditional dance performances, craft-making sessions, and a visit to a local market. Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, depart from Gulu and enjoy a scenic drive to Kidepo Valley National Park, Uganda’s most remote national park located near the border with South Sudan. Upon arrival, check in at Apoka Safari Lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, head out for a game drive towards the hot springs through the palm tree-lined Kidepo River valley. Along the way, look out for wildlife such as ostriches, leopards, tortoises, and other animals found in the park. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Start the day with an early morning game drive in the Narus Valley, the main wildlife area of Kidepo Valley National Park. During the drive, you may spot elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, elands, oribis, jackals, and many other wildlife species. Return to the lodge for lunch and some time to relax. In the afternoon, visit the Lorokul Cultural Group to experience the rich culture of the Karamojong people. Explore a traditional manyatta (homestead), enjoy cultural dances, learn about cattle keeping, taste local dishes, and listen to stories about the traditions and lifestyle of the community. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, depart from Kidepo Valley National Park and begin your journey towards Eastern Uganda. Enjoy scenic views of the Karamoja landscapes, local villages, and mountain ranges along the way. On the way, make a stop in Moroto for lunch and a short cultural experience. Visit a local community or craft center to learn about the daily life and traditions of the Karimojong people. You may also explore the local market and interact with the community. After the visit, continue to Sipi Falls, located on the foothills of Mount Elgon. Upon arrival, check in at sipi heritage lodge and relax while enjoying the cool weather and beautiful views of the waterfalls and surrounding hills. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
After breakfast, you will meet your guide for a briefing before beginning your adventure. A walking stick will be provided to support you during the hike to the 3 distinct Sipi Waterfalls. The trek to the top covers approximately 7 km and includes steep ascents, ladder climbing, and scenic walks through local farms. Sturdy hiking boots with a firm grip are highly recommended for comfort and safety. Upon reaching the summit, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Mount Elgon, Lake Kyoga, the Karamoja plains, and the surrounding landscapes perfect for photography and videography. You will then enjoy your packed lunch while taking in the serene environment. You will have the opportunity to engage in an exciting abseiling experience at the sipi falls. Your guide will coordinate this activity at a designated section of the central waterfall ensuring both safety and enjoyment. Continue exploring the beauty of Sipi Falls with visits to the other two waterfalls, each offering its own unique scenery In the afternoon, set out for a guided coffee tour. This experience will take you to a local coffee farm, where you will visit the plantation and learn about how coffee is grown. You will then proceed to the processing area, where you will take part in preparing the coffee, removing the husks, roasting the beans, and finally making a fresh cup of coffee to enjoy. After the day’s activities, you will return to your accommodation for relaxation, followed by dinner and an overnight stay.
After an early breakfast, set off on a scenic drive back to Kampala, with a stop in Jinja for lunch. You will arrive in the evening and continue with your transfer to Entebbe International Airport.
